Introduction
On this page, you can find all the information you need as well as where and who to contact for the purpose of making an application to have your engineering qualifications recognised – in English as well. Please note, however, that the official language is German. This means that the application and any communications associated with it must be in German.
Engineers with foreign qualifications can apply for vacancies at companies even without recognition of their professional status. However, without recognition of their qualifications, they are not permitted to use the German professional title of " Ingenieur/Ingenieurin" (Engineer) on its own or in a phrase.
Professional title of "Engineer"
The provisions of the Engineers' Act (Ingenieurgesetz = IngG) of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg specify who is allowed to use the title of "Ingenieur/Ingenieurin" (Engineer) on its own or in a phrase on the basis of a diploma/degree certificate from a foreign higher-education institute or other foreign school or college. Using the German professional title of "Ingenieur/Ingenieurin" (Engineer) is only permitted if the foreign engineer training has been officially recognised.
As of 27 February 2016, the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Engineers is responsible for recognition. As the approving authority, the Chamber of Engineers decides whether to approve the application for permission to use the title of "Ingenieur/Ingenieurin" (Engineer). A prerequisite for approval is that the foreign training undergone is regarded as equivalent to that required in Germany for the corresponding qualification. For diplomas/degrees obtained by EU citizens who have obtained a diploma/degree in a member state of the European Union or in a Contracting State of the Agreement on the European Economic Area, less stringent requirements are applicable.
